Throw distance is the amount of space needed between a screen and projector to display a specific size image. Some projectors need more space, some medium amount of space and others need very little space. These factors will help you to set up your projector.
There are three categories of throw distance projectors; they include ultra-short throw, short throw, and standard or long throw. Keep the categories in mind when shopping for a projector.
The mirror and lens assembly in a projector determines the throw distance capability. The long throw and short throw projectors send light to the screen directly out of the lens. The light that comes out of the lens of an ultra-short projector is directed away from the screen to reflect off on a mirror of a particular size and the angle attached to the projector that directs the image on the screen. The ultra-short throw projectors don’t have the zoom capability. The projector should be positioned to match the screen size.
The short-throw projectors have lenses that can display larger images from the shorter distances. The ultra-short projectors can display images of up to 100-inches from about 2 feet or less.
